The man behind the questionable decisions

Meet the Dad Behind the Dominion.

One wife. Four kids. Dogs. Virginia roots. An unreasonable amount of Coca-Cola. And somehow I decided the internet needed to hear about all of it.

James and Jo Copeland

The people behind the chaos.

So, who is this guy?

I'm James Copeland.

I'm a husband, father of four, Virginian, Navy dad, storyteller, and the fellow responsible for Olde Dominion Dad.

Most stories around here begin with me thinking, “There is absolutely no way I'm going to forget this.” Which, as a father of four, is exactly how you guarantee you'll forget it by Thursday.

So I write it down.

The things Jo says. The logic my children use. Family trips that go sideways. Projects that should have been easy. The moments that are funny now and the ones we'll probably realize were hilarious five years from now.

I'm not here because I've mastered fatherhood. I'm just trying to keep the good stories.

Fatherhood. Laughter. Feral children.

Why Olde Dominion Dad?

Virginia roots. Family stories. Questionable judgment.

Olde Dominion Dad started with a pretty simple idea: the best family stories are usually hiding inside the ordinary stuff.

A road trip. A church night. A kid saying something completely unhinged at the dinner table. A project that should have taken twenty minutes and somehow became a three-hour ordeal.

I'm a Virginian, and that matters to the name and the feel of this place. The Old Dominion is home, and most of these stories were born right here in the middle of family life, work, church, dogs, kids, and whatever else happened that day.

This isn't a parenting manual. I don't have a ten-step system, a beige Instagram kitchen, or children who quietly discuss their feelings over organic snacks.

I just like telling good stories before we forget them.

“

If we don't create the next great thing, then there will be no more greatness.

Meet the cast

The people responsible for most of the material.

01

The wife

Jo

Brilliant, unfiltered, occasionally clumsy, and somehow still willing to be married to the man documenting all of this.

02

The oldest

Logan

Sweet, clever, and fully capable of looking innocent while being somewhere near the center of whatever just happened.

03

The daughter

Kara

Smart, expressive, and equipped with opinions strong enough to make you briefly forget she is still one of the children.

04

The wild card

Slayden

Energy, determination, and the general belief that most ordinary situations could probably use a little more intensity.

05

The tiny boss

Moira

Small in stature, enormous in personality, and already responsible for some of the best lines ever recorded on this site.

06

The support staff

The Dogs

Hair, noise, loyalty, chaos, and the occasional reminder that the children are not actually the only creatures running the house.

The Copeland kids

Four kids. Infinite material.

No stock families required

This is the actual circus.

These are the people behind the stories. The vacations that somehow become survival exercises. The conversations that make me stop and ask, “Did you really just say that?” The arguments, victories, disasters, inside jokes, and completely ordinary Tuesday afternoons.

Someday the house will be quieter. The shoes won't be piled by the door. Nobody will be yelling for Dad from three rooms away.

Until then, I'm writing it down.

Because the chaos is temporary. The stories don't have to be.
